DWYANE WADE & Gabrielle union use met gala to send message about trans suicide rates

Retired NBA star Dwyane Wade and actress Gabrielle Union have always been vocal about social justice issues and advocating for marginalised communities. Their appearance at the 2023 Met Gala was no exception.

The couple used their platform to highlight suicide in the trans community.

Trans People continue to face discrimination within society, which can greatly impact their mental health. Studies show from the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, Trans People are at a higher risk of suicide than the general population. Suicide attempt rate at an astounding 41% compared to 4.6% for the overall population.

Dwyane Wade and Gabrielle Union made one of the most powerful statements of the night. The couple wore matching outfits with the words “Protect Trans Kids” on the back of their jackets in bold white letters. The statement was a direct call to action for society to do more to protect and support Trans People. 

Dwyane Wade and Gabrielle Union have a personal connection to the Trans community. Their daughter, Zaya, came out as Transgender in 2020, and the couple has been vocal about their support for her and other trans youth. 

Wade has spoken out previously about the importance of parents educating themselves and being supportive of their children’s gender identity.

The couple’s message at the Met Gala was met with widespread support from fans and advocates for the Trans community. Many took to social media to praise their bold statement and call for more awareness and action to the crisis.
