Jake and Hannah Graf are the first high-profile transgender couple in the UK to embark on the journey of parenthood. And their story, from the prejudice they have received, to the challenges of surrogacy and birthing during the Covid-19 lockdown, has all been beautifully documented by Channel 4.
Our Baby: A Modern Miracle documentary is a 45-minute-long viewing, that perfectly captures the highs and lows of Jake and Hannah’s narrative. Both Jake and Hannah are transgender and they decided to search for both a surrogate mother and a sperm donor. A decision that felt right to them as a family. The Channel 4 documentary, which filmed the couple for over a year during the entire process, discusses sensitive issues like the hate comments they received on social media, as well as the fact they sadly missed the birth as a result of lockdowns.
The show also notes how the couple are doing so much positive work for the LGBTQIA+ community. Jake, an actor and film director, highlights trans issues on his Instagram channel while working with charities to raise funds to support trans people. And Hannah was the highest-ranking transgender officer of the British Army and has won an MBE for services to the military’s LGBTQ+ community. She also works closely with trans charities to raise awareness on issues that affect the community and speaks out on her Instagram profile.
Our Baby: A Modern Miracle is a fascinating watch. Hopefully, it will open more people’s minds to understand that every family setup is valid and should be both accepted and celebrated.
